Art Lit Discovers Frida Kahlo, Volunteers Needed

The time has finally arrived and we are in need of Art Literacy volunteers!

We have an AMAZING Art Literacy lesson planned for the students of Tumwater to finish off this school year. They are going to get to put their unique spin on a self-portrait, just like our artist Frida Kahlo did.  But only classes that have someone to run the lesson will get to participate...and we want that to be EVERYONE!

Training Session - Tuesday May 3rd from 6-7:30

Please join us TUESDAY, May 3rd from 6-7:30 for a training you are going to LOVE!  Create a frameable piece of art, for FREE!  We just ask that you volunteer to teach (at least)one 1 lesson of Art Lit at Tumwater the week of May 9th-13th and/or May 16-19th.  The artist is edgy and the art is STUNNING!  Get out of your head and into your heart and help us make this happen for all the kids at Tumwater Middle School!

Sign up here:  2022 Tumwater Art Literacy Training

Art Literacy Volunteer Shifts

The weeks of May 9th and May 15th will have special bell schedules to accommodate state testing. Since the class periods are longer, they are the ideal time to teach art literacy lessons, which will be happening during their science classes!

Please ask your child who their science teacher is and what period they have them! (or, surprise them the day of - you can find their class schedule in ParentVue.)  A few of the class periods span across two days, and some are divided across the lunch period. Those are noted in each volunteer opportunity.

Feel free to sign up for as many shifts as you can!  We need at least one1 person for each class to teach the lesson.  If a class is without a volunteer, the lesson will not happen.

Sign up here: Frida Kahlo Art Literacy (listed by teacher) **Pro tip: Filter by Tumwater Middle School

All volunteers must be eligible within our TMS volunteer database. Head to www.tumwaterpto.org/volunteer for requirements.

Huge thanks to all our Rising Tides donors and our Art Lit chair, Melissa Manos, for making this opportunity a reality.

QUESTIONS? Please reach out to our fabulous Art Lit chair, Melissa Manos at melissa@mkmdesigns.biz or our Volunteer Coordinators, Jyothi & Kristi, at tumwaterpto.volunteer@gmail.com.

Donations & Volunteers Needed for 8th Grade Celebration

The first annual 8th Grade Celebration has been scheduled for Friday, 6/17 from 12pm-3:30pm. We will have all the usual party elements: music, a photo booth, games, lunch, and other fun surprises to send off this crew in style!

DONATIONS: In order to support the 8th grade celebration, we are asking parents to make a $25/student donation that goes directly to funding this event. We recognize that not all families will be able to donate this amount, so if you are able to be a hero & “sponsor” another child, that would be amazing.

Donations can be accepted via Paypal. ALL students will participate in the festivities, regardless of financial participation.

If you have any questions or would like to pay by check, please email amber.fer@frontier.com.

VOLUNTEERS: Parent volunteers are needed! If you would like help with planning this fun event on 6/17, please reach out Amber at amber.fer@frontier.com. Many volunteers will also be needed on the day of the event. Look for volunteer sign ups in your email several weeks before the big day.

Mark your calendars now!!

Winter Volunteering Opportunities

We are thrilled to announce that volunteers whose vaccination status is verified are allowed to volunteer at school!

We have current opportunities for OBOB Battle Volunteers and Lunchtime Volunteers (described below), as well as some updates for the 8th Grade Celebration. If you are interested in volunteering for Art Literacy, be on the lookout for a separate email when that has been scheduled!

OBOB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - NEXT WEEK (MON 2/28 & TUE 3/1)

OBOB Battles are coming up on February 28th, March 1st and March 7th! OBOB Battles will be held in person at school during the school day. We need moderators and scorekeepers/timekeepers to help make the battles run smoothly. The opportunities are briefly described below:

  • OBOB Battle Moderator: This opportunity is to serve as a Moderator for our OBOB battles. The moderator is responsible for leading the battle which includes performing the coin toss, clearly asking questions to each team in order, determining correct responses, assigning points and handling challenges.

  • OBOB Battle Scorekeeper/TimekeeperThis opportunity is to serve as the Scorekeeper/Timekeeper for our OBOB battles. This role will include recording points assigned by the moderator during the battle and keeping time after the moderator has finished reading each question. This is a great opportunity to volunteer for the OBOB battles if you are unfamiliar with OBOB and would like to observe the battles without the responsibility of moderating.

Training will be provided for volunteers, however if you are unfamiliar with OBOB and would like to see what a battle looks like before signing up, this YouTube Video provides a good example of an OBOB battle.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtTsoHtGTLg

COVID VACCINE DOCUMENTATION & APPROVAL

Lunch Volunteers Needed

We wanted to share about a current volunteer opportunity to support our amazing Tumwater staff during the lunch period.

Lunch Volunteers

Lunch volunteers will assist in the Commons area during lunch periods by greeting and helping students, reminding students about social distancing as needed, and cleaning tables between lunch periods. Currently students are assigned to one of six 17-minute dining periods and volunteers will work alongside administrators, counselors, and other staff to help keep lunchtime running smoothly.

To ensure a smooth transition between lunch periods, it is requested that volunteers plan to stay for the entire six-block lunch period. The timing of the shifts are as follows:

  • Monday - Wednesday 11:20am - 1:40pm (Non-Advisory Day)

  • Thursday-Friday 11:40am - 1:45pm (Advisory Day)

This is an urgent volunteer need starting Monday, November 1st, 2021! Although volunteer openings are only shown in the system for the next two weeks, this will be an ongoing need and additional shifts will be added in the future.

Please follow this link for the lunchtime volunteer opportunities.

A few other items to note:

  • Volunteers will be required to wear masks and may be stationed outside to monitor recess. Volunteers may also be standing and walking around for the majority of the shift. so please dress appropriately.

  • Only volunteers with approved documentation of their COVID vaccination will be allowed to view and sign up for volunteer shifts. At the moment, only 50% of our volunteer base has this approval. If you haven't done so already, please upload your vaccine documentation into the system so you can be approved by the district to volunteer onsite.  Instructions can be found at https://tumwaterpto.org/volunteer

  • When you arrive, go to the front office to check in. Look for the “Welcome Tumwater Volunteers” sign and follow the instructions for signing into the computer and getting your volunteer badge.

  • If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Jyothi & Kristi at tumwaterpto.volunteer@gmail.com.

Vaccination Requirements for All Volunteers Due 10/18

Screen Shot 2021-09-30 at 5.29.18 PM.png

ALL volunteers in Oregon schools must be fully vaccinated by October 18th. Fully vaccinated means you have received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine OR a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and it has been 14 days since your final dose.

You must upload your vaccination card or your immunization record from a licensed medical provider to your volunteer profile by this date. Volunteers who are unable to be vaccinated due to a documented medical condition (including pregnancy) or due to a sincerely held religious belief must submit the required Oregon Health Authority (OHA) form.

To upload your vaccination card or to access an exemption form:

  1. Create a digital image of your vaccination card in .jpg format.

  2. Log into your myimpactpage.com account.

  3. Go to the "My Profile" tab in the upper right and click on "Additional Info" from the drop-down menu.

  4. Choose "Beaverton School District" from the Organization List drop-down menu

  5. Click the Select Organization button.

  6. Scroll to the very bottom of the profile information screen to find the COVID Vaccination section.

  7. Click the Choose file button to select the image of your vaccination card or immunization record.

  8. Click Save.

  9. If you need an exemption form, click on the "i" icon and download the form. Once it's completed, you upload it here through the Choose file button.

Once you've uploaded your information, it will be reviewed by District staff; other volunteers will not have access to these documents. Event coordinators and office staff will ensure that requirements are met in the system before you're allowed to begin your volunteer activity. They will not review cards, records, or exemption forms. This must be done through the steps above.

Welcome to the 2021-22 Tumwater Volunteer Community

TumwaterPTO_logo_final_color.gif

Throughout the year, Tumwater’s Volunteer Coordinators will be emailing the TMS volunteer database specific opportunities to support the students and staff of Tumwater MS. Volunteer sign-ups that happen at the school during the school day will be scheduled through the mIP system.

Info regarding the volunteer application & background check through the mIP system, as well as moving your profile to TMS, can be found at www.tumwaterpto.com/volunteer.

CURRENT VOLUNTEER STATUS

Due to limited space and the need for adult volunteers to exercise 6 feet of distance from students, volunteers generally will not be allowed to volunteer on district property, including inside and outside of schools, during school hours. However, the district has approved a limited list of activities that a school principal can allow; it's up to the discretion of the school principal.

Please visit BSD’s Back to School page for the latest news and updates regarding the district policies for volunteers, including providing proof of vaccination status and policies for medical or religious exemptions.

If any volunteer opportunities become available at Tumwater, we will send out an email notification after they are posted to the system.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERING: What to Expect

Volunteering opportunities in middle school tend to be more school-wide and event specific, such as:

  • Field trip chaperones

  • Event management (school socials, welcome activities, Science Fair, Book Fair)

  • Art Literacy

  • OBOB

  • Lost & Found management

  • Staff Appreciation

  • 8th Grade Send-off Activities

There may be opportunities directly within a classroom (similar to elementary school), but those are limited and dependant on the style of individual teachers.

Your middle schooler may be resistant to having you volunteer, but most opportunities work with such a broad number of students that you can remain discreetly anonymous :)

PTO EVENTS: Partnering with TMS

The traditions of Tumwater MS remain to be written as we begin this new year.  However, like most BSD middle schools, we expect that our events will be partnerships between the PTO and the Tumwater staff for events such as Science Fair, student socials, and/or other evening events that support student learning.

UPDATE YOUR PROFILE

Please take a moment to head to myimpactpage.com and enter your username and password.  If you don’t remember your username or password, you can reset them by clicking on the "Forgot Username or Password" link.

Under “My Profile,” please do the following:

  • Update your Contact Information

  • Upload documentation of your COVID-19 Vaccination: Refer to BSD’s Back to School page for instructions.

  • Check your Privacy Settings: Please check “I want other volunteers to see my name” or you will be marked Anonymous

  • Subscribe to an email update of any upcoming volunteer assignments

We are excited to partner with you in Tumwater’s inaugural year!
